Rabbi William Gershon
Rabbi William Gershon has been the Spiritual Leader of Congregation Shearith
Israel since 1998. Born and raised in New Jersey, Rabbi Gershon is the
product of the Conservative Movement. Rabbi Gershon attended the joint
program of the Jewish Theological Seminary and Columbia University where
he received a BA with distinction in Biblical Studies and BA in Ancient
Semitic Languages and Cultures. He received his rabbinic ordination from
the Seminary in 1987 and was co-recipient of the Cytron Prize as the outstanding
graduate of his rabbinical school class. During his student years at the
Seminary, he served as assistant to then Chancellor Gerson D. Cohen, z"l.
Before coming to Dallas, Rabbi Gershon served pulpits with distinction
in Minneapolis, Minnesota and Southfield, Michigan. Rabbi Gershon has
served as a member of United Jewish Appeal (U.J.A.) At Congregation Shearith Israel Rabbi Gershon has brought vision and energy coupled with his passion for Judaism and the Jewish people. His impassioned support for Israel, inspiring sermons and teaching have uplifted our congregation and community. Through his dedicated leadership he has reached out to create exemplary programming and provide new direction for the congregation. He currently serves on the boards of the Ann and Nate Levine Academy, Hebrew Free Loan, B’nai Zion, the Dallas Holocaust Memorial Center and the Dallas Faith Communities Coalition. Rabbi Gershon is a member of the Rabbinical Assembly, the world-wide organization of Conservative Rabbis and is currently its Financial Secretary. He is also a Past-President of the Rabbinic Association of Greater Dallas and has been selected to be on the Rabbinic Leadership Council of the Jewish Theological Seminary. Rabbi Gershon is married to Raquel Pomerantz Gershon, and they have three
wonderful children, Benji, Eliana and Yoni.
