2011-2012 Torah Fund Pin Theme – Hiddur Mitzvah
The concept of hiddur mitzvah-beautifying or embellishing a mitzvah –
is considered by many to be the inspiration for Jewish aesthetics. One possible source of the mitzvah derives from a verse in the Son of the Sea: “This is my G-d and I will glorify Him” (Exodus 15:2).
With adornment, sacred objects become more precious.

This year’s Torah Fund theme is one that particularly resonates with women who have always been involved in Jewish artistic activities. Whether in the stitching guilds in 16th century Venetian synagogues or needlepoint crafters in 20th century women’s groups, women are committed to the most ancient of Jewish values.

torah fund pin The pomegranate imagery of the 5772 Torah Fund pin has a multilayered meaning. Pomegranates (rimonim) are associated with
the land of Israel as one of its bountiful fruits, and rimonim is also the term for the finial adornments on the atzei chayyim, or staves,
of a Torah scroll.

The Torah Fund assures that our traditions, rituals and culture continue to thrive. This fundraising campaign raises scholarship funds for The Jewish Theological Seminary (New York, New York), The Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies (Los Angeles, California) and The Schechter Institute (Jerusalem). These three institutions are the powerhouses of today, training tomorrow's rabbis, cantors, educators and lay leaders. In addition, campaign funds are raised to support residence halls, library resources, the Women's League Seminary Synagogue and the Education Pavilion at JTS.
