Our Shearith Choirs

High Holy Days Choir

Conducted by Judy Kline, in conjunction with Hazzan Zhrebker, the High Holy Days Choir is an integral part of the music program at Congregation Shearith Israel. The choir performs during the High Holidays and Yiskor services. This choir is composed of mostly professional singers along with singers from our own congregation. To become a member of the High Holy Days Choir, a trained voice and good music reading skills are necessary. Please contact Hazzan Itzhak Zhrebker at cantorz@shearith.org.

Shearith Choirs

If you have ever watched a musical Shabbat and thought to yourself, “I can do that,” then join us! Singing at Shearith can be rewarding, exciting and lead to incredible friendship, educational and fun opportunities. Join in an incredibly creative medium and lead other congregants through Kol Rina or Kol Neshamah. No audition required.

Kol Neshamah - Women's Choir

Kol Neshamah “Voice of the Soul”

Congregation Shearith Israel has its own “Voice of the Soul” in its women’s a cappella group, Kol Neshamah. Their beautiful voices add joy and energy to the worship experience at Shearith Israel.

These volunteers practice each week under the direction of Hazzan Itzhak Zhrebker.  The group enjoys singing together and takes delight in enhancing our services. Be sure to attend  services at which Kol Neshamah participates.

Want to join?
Our members find singing in the group is a comfortable and fun way to learn prayers. Rehearsals are normally on Mondays from  7:30 until 9:30 pm. If you are interested in joining the camaraderie and becoming part of Kol Neshamah, please contact Hazzan Zhrebker.

Kol Neshamah Members rave about their experiences in the choir:
"I joined because I’ve always loved to sing. I even took voice lessons for many years. Kol Neshamah gives me the opportunity to be among others who share that passion. Adding some ruach  to Shabbat services is a huge bonus.”
– Carolyn Marcus Abrams

“I love singing the prayers each week at services. Singing with the choir gives me a chance to improve the quality of my singing while doing something I love to do.”
– Carole Ann Hoppenstein

“I enjoy singing as a pleasant alternative way to connect with the shul and the service.”
– Maribeth Lipscomb

“I joined Kol Neshamah to find a voice for my neshamah.”
– Ilana Pomeranz

Kol Rina - Men's Choir

- Kol Rina “A Voice (Shout) of Joy”
Congregation Shearith Israel has its own “Voice of Joy” in its men’s   a cappella    group, Kol Rina – which means a voice or shout of joy. Their beautiful voices add joy and energy to the worship experience at Shearith Israel.

These volunteers practice each week under the direction of Hazzan Itzhak Zhrebker.  The group enjoys singing together and takes delight in enhancing our services. Be sure to attend  services at which Kol Rina participates.

“I love the fact that when we blend together in harmony, we can make a sound that none of us can produce individually.  Working together with everyone else to reach a common goal is a wonderful experience.”
-Ron Honig

“It’s much fun, very challenging and a privilege to be taught by the best and kindest Hazzan ever.”
-Jay Robinson

“It makes me feel that I can contribute to my community; and of course, I love to sing.”
-Jose Orozco

“I participate in Kol Rina because I like to sing Hebrew songs and enjoy Hebrew music; but more so, the fellowship with my fellow Kol Rina members is quite enjoyable and it feels like we’re family.  The Hazzan brings us all together in such a wonderful way.”
