shearith responds to the storm

Please watch this page for updates. Last update:  November 19

Coat Drive: Month of December
During December, please donate coats and outerwear for all ages.
Bring donations to Shearith Israel. Donations will be given to families in areas affected by the tornadoes.

Helping our Shearith Members in Need
Our dedicated Shearith Mitzvah Meals volunteer team is ready to provide meals to those who could use a home cooked meal or meals to ease these difficult days.

Moreover, if you have experienced damage or loss and have specific needs that our synagogue community might be able to assist with, we would like to know so we can try to help. If you would like a meal and/or have other pressing needs, please let us know by contacting Theresa at thurt@shearith.org or 214-939-7314.

List of Congregants Who Can Offer Resources or Expertise
It would also be helpful for us to have a list of congregants who can offer resources or expertise that may be useful to those who have been affected by the storm. Specifically, we would be most interested to know if you can help in these areas:
--Home or apartment rentals
--Home building/general contracting
--Navigating insurance questions
--Pet housing
--Tree removal/landscaping

Please let us know by contacting Theresa at thurt@shearith.org or 214-939-7314.

Shearith Israel Family Room Open for Families Who Need a Break

Jewish Family Service of Dallas is Ready to Assist
From JFS:
At Jewish Family Service of Greater Dallas, one thing is for sure -- our door is open and we are here to help. We have set up a dedicated page on our website and our Intake Team is ready to support you in your hour of need.

Even if you are still unsure of what's next, we are an ear to listen, a place to gather resources and the latest on the news around the aftermath of the Dallas tornado.
  • If you need assistance from JFS, call 972-437-9950
  • For a list of community resources, click here
  • Call 3-1-1 if you encounter debris in the rights-of-way or downed trees
  • As always, in case of emergency please call 9-1-1
Information, as we have it, will be updated on both our website and our Facebook page.

For our incredible volunteers, the JFS Community Engagement team has compiled a list of how we can utilize your support. This week, we need help making welfare calls to our community, running our food pantry, and delivering Kosher Home Delivered Meals.

Thanks to our congregants who came together on Friday, October 25, and assembled baskets for our Shearith families whose homes were either damaged or destroyed in the devastating recent tornadoes.
To all our congregants, if your home was damaged or destroyed and you have not been in contact with us, PLEASE let us know! Contact Theresa at thurt@shearith.org or call 214-939-7314.

As we concluded our reading of Deuteronomy during Simchat Torah services, we all recited the words “Hazak Hazak, V’Nithazek”—“be strong, be strong, and together we shall be strengthened”. Those words ring particularly true this week as we move forward from the darkness of destruction to the light of renewal. Thanks to each of you for being a part of this healing and rebuilding process.
